Malaysia Travel Itinerary – 8 Days of Budget Travel
Malaysia Budget Travel Itinerary
I’m incredibly excited to share my Malaysia Budget Travel Itinerary, carefully planned two months in advance to balance budget travel with luxury experiences.
My adventure begins in Singapore, where I’ll spend three days exploring the city before crossing borders by bus into Malaysia. Traveling overland from Singapore to Malacca (Melaka) is not only affordable but also an experience in itself. Malacca is a UNESCO World Heritage City, rich in history, culture, and timeless charm.
From Malacca, I continue to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s vibrant capital, known for its modern skyline, food culture, and diverse experiences. The journey doesn’t stop there. I’ll head up to the cool mountains of Genting Highlands for breathtaking views, entertainment, and a refreshing escape before returning to Kuala Lumpur to wrap up my trip.
This is 8 day Malaysia Budget Travel Itinerary, ideal for solo travelers and for Couples, especially those who want a luxury feel without overspending. You can confidently follow this route. It’s practical, safe, and budget-friendly.
To make my journey more flexible and adventurous, I’ve decided to rent a bike during the trip. For this, I converted my Sri Lankan driving license into an International Driving Permit (IDP).
👉 If you’re a Sri Lankan traveler, you can easily obtain your IDP through www.aaceylon.lk. Visit the website or contact them directly for more details.
This journey proves that you don’t need a high budget to enjoy premium travel experiences. Just smart planning, early bookings, and the courage to travel solo.
Day 1 – Singapore to Malacca by Bus (Budget & Easy Option)

For my first day heading to Malaysia, I booked my bus ticket one day in advance from Singapore (City Plaza) to Malacca (Melaka).
There are many online platforms where you can book bus tickets from Singapore to Malaysia, but I personally chose www.easybook.com because it was simple, reliable, and offered multiple timing options.
Booking online is highly recommended, especially during weekends and peak travel seasons. The journey from Singapore to Malacca takes approximately 4 – 5 hours, depending on traffic and immigration clearance at the border.
✨ Why this option is great for budget travelers:
-
-
-
Affordable ticket prices
-
Comfortable air-conditioned buses
-
Easy online booking
-
Direct route to Malacca
-
-
Traveling by bus from Singapore to Malaysia is one of the most cost-effective and convenient ways for solo travelers.

After going through the immigration clearance at the Singapore-Malaysia border, I obtained official permission to enter Malaysia. I encountered no hiccups in the process. I reached the beautiful UNESCO World Heritage City of Malacca at 1:00 PM.
It marked the beginning of my Malaysia travel itinerary, and I was already excited to travel to and explore this historic destination. Being a totally budget traveler myself, I always compare prices for the best deals before settling on where to stay. For Malacca, you can search for comfortable budget hotels through www.booking.com.
Upon arriving at my hotel and checking in, I decided to rest for a few hours before venturing into the city in the evening.
The malacca is a peaceful ambiance, particularly in the evening. There is a very beautiful lake area with small shopping centers, cafes, and street vendors. The night scenery has a calming, vibrant, and inviting atmosphere. Walking around the city at night was an amazing feeling due to the reflections of lights on water, a cool breeze, and historic surroundings that surely showcase why Malacca is one of the most-loved places in any Malaysia travel itinerary.

Day 2 – Malacca City Tour
On the second day of the Malaysia travel itinerary that I created, I chose to explore Melaka Straits Mosque & A Famosa, A famosa is an old Portuguese fort built in the 16th century that is one of the oldest European landmark in Southeast Asia. It is an important symbol of colonial history in Malacca.
I then visited Bukit Cina and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, which are significant heritage locations reflecting Chinese cultural influences in Malaysia. After lunch, I explored Kampung Dua for a local experience, and in the evening

Day 3 – Malacca to Genting Highlands (Mountain Escape)
On Day 3 of my Malaysia travel itinerary, I checked out from my hotel early in the morning and started my journey to Genting Highlands. It’s approximately a 5-hour ride from Malacca, so starting early is very important.
If you don’t want to ride, you can take a bus instead. The average ticket price is around RM 70 (Ringgit 70), and you can book online through www.easybook.com a convenient option for budget travelers.
Important Travel Tip 🚨
Genting Highlands is a cool mountain destination with temperatures around 17°C. If you’re riding a scooter or motorbike from Malacca to Genting Highlands, make sure to:
-
-
-
Start early in the morning
-
Ride slowly and carefully
-
Use a scooter/motorbike in good condition
-
Avoid riding after 2 PM, as the area can become misty and visibility may reduce
-
-
Mountain roads can be dangerous if you’re not cautious. On the way to Genting Highlands, I visited the beautiful Chin Swee Caves Temple, located high in the mountains. It’s a significant Taoist temple known for mountain views, spiritual heritage, and cultural importance in Malaysia.

Finally, at around 2:00 PM, I checked into Swiss-Garden Hotel, Genting Highlands. Compared to other hotels in Genting, the price was very reasonable for that day, making it a great option for travelers looking for comfort at a fair rate. After a long ride, I rested for about two hours to recharge. It was my first time experiencing such a long bike ride, and although I felt tired, it was truly an unforgettable and exciting experience.
In the evening, I went out to find some food nearby, enjoyed a simple dinner, and returned early to the hotel to sleep. After a full day of travel and adventure, proper rest was exactly what I needed. The cool weather in Genting Highlands made the night even more relaxing a perfect end to a long but beautiful day in my Malaysia Tour.

Day 4 – Exploring the Highest Points of Genting Highlands
On Day 4 of my Malaysia Travel Itinerary – 8 Days of Budget Travel, I planned to stay in Genting Highlands and explore the highest points of this beautiful hill station. I rode up to the top of the highlands, and the views were simply breathtaking.
From above, I could see the famous Genting Skyway cable car gliding over the mountains and the iconic Genting SkyWorlds Hotel standing proudly in the cool mist. The fresh mountain air, scenic viewpoints, and peaceful atmosphere made it one of the most amazing experiences of my Malaysia budget trip. Genting Highlands is truly a must-visit destination for anyone planning a Malaysia travel adventure.

Day 5 – Leaving Genting & Exploring Kuala Lumpur
Day 5 welcomed me with heavy rain. It was a very rainy day, but I still managed to continue my bike ride carefully. I had to stop many times along the way because of the rain, but honestly, that’s part of the adventure, right?
Deep inside, I felt a little sad knowing my tour was slowly coming to an end. After so many beautiful experiences, it was hard to accept that soon I would have to return home. But every journey must end, and new ones will always begin. Finally, I decided to leave Genting Highlands and continue my journey towards Kuala Lumpur. On the way, I stopped to visit the famous Batu Caves Temple.
Batu Caves is truly an amazing and spiritual place. The massive golden statue of Lord Murugan, the colorful staircase, and the limestone caves create a breathtaking atmosphere. It’s one of the most iconic landmarks in Malaysia and definitely worth visiting if you are traveling to Kuala Lumpur. After exploring Batu Caves, I continued my ride to Kuala Lumpur.

Day 5 to Day 7 – Exploring Kuala Lumpur
I decided to spend Day 5 to Day 7 in Kuala Lumpur and planned to fly back to Sri Lanka on the 8th day. During my stay in Kuala Lumpur, I visited many famous places, explored the city streets, enjoyed delicious local foods, and did some shopping as well. The city is vibrant, modern, and full of life, especially at night.
One of the best things I found was a budget-friendly place to stay near the Petronas Twin Towers. It was affordable and in a perfect location. I’ll share all the details about this accommodation in my next blog post . so stay tuned!
